Born and raised in New Castle, Indiana, the third son of four boys. Irish descent. Little Moon of Alban by James Costigan, first theatrical experience in high school. Attended Wheaton College, majoring in Speech Communications. Freshman Class President. Studied in Israel. Traveled through Europe and stood on the stage at Epidaurus. Served in Bangladesh as a relief worker. Won NCAA All-American swimmer. Began theatre training with James Young while at Wheaton College. Worked for the International relief agency, Medical Assistance Program (MAP) upon graduation.

Earned MFA in acting at Southern Methodist University and upon graduation, began professional acting career at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for $100.

After a move to New York, I became very active in regional theatre, including two-year stays in Los Angeles. In 1990’s, also worked in residence at Tudor Hall in Bel Air, MD, renowned birthplace of Edwin Booth, and served as Executive Director of The Preservation Association of Tudor Hall. During this time, frequently performed at Arena Stage and The Shakespeare Theatre (Washington D.C.). Joined the Catholic University of America’s Drama Department in 2001; ran the M.F.A. Acting program while freelancing in D.C. as an actor. Earned tenure 2008 and Full Professor at Catholic University, 2012. Author of In Rehearsal: In the World, In the Room and On your Own, published by Routledge, 2012. Began directing in prisons with RTA (Rehabilitation through the Arts) in NY at Woodbourne Correctional Facility and with PAF (Prison Arts Foundation) in Northern Ireland at Magilligan H.M.S.

Married to Christie Brown, currently the Executive Director at New Dramatists, NYC. Proud father of two children, Julia (36) and Owen (14) and two dogs, Chuck (Black Lab) and Shane (Rough Collie).
